Driftwood Communications Job Board
Business Development Manager, Telecom & Connectivity
Description
Driftwood Communications builds telecom infrastructure across Western Canada. Our existing business is concentrated in long-term MSA work with one major carrier. We're diversifying, and this role exists to bring work through the door from a wider set of buyers, fast.
You're the deal flow engine. While our Director-level partnerships hire works on multi-year JVs and government program capture, you work the regional and adjacent markets where the sales cycle is shorter and the pursuit volume is higher. Smaller BC and Western Canadian telcos. ISPs and cooperatives recently awarded provincial or federal connectivity funding. Tower companies. Fixed wireless ISPs. Anyone who's buying outside plant work in BC at the kind of scale Driftwood can profitably deliver.
You report initially to the CEO and shift to the Director, Strategic Partnerships once that role is filled and ramped.
What you'll own
- Build and work a target list of 60+ regional and adjacent buyers in BC, refreshed quarterly. Smaller telcos and ISPs. Recent and forthcoming Connecting Communities BC awardees. CRTC Broadband Fund recipients. Tower companies. Fixed wireless ISPs. First Nations economic development corporations operating their own infrastructure.
- Sub-of-prime channel. Build named relationships at the larger contractors, so Driftwood is on the bid list.
- Disciplined pipeline mechanics. CRM hygiene. Weekly pipeline review and proposal coordination to ensure quotes are accurate, on time, and aligned with operational capacity.
Who you are
- You have at least three years behind you — probably five or more — in construction or telecom business development, estimating, or sales engineering. You've personally closed deals in the $200K–$2M range. You know how a construction sales cycle moves: intro, RFQ, proposal, award.
- You have a working BC network. Maybe you came up through one of the OSP contractors. Maybe you sold into telecom from an adjacent industry. Either way, you can make calls that get answered.
- You're a hunter. Twenty cold calls before lunch doesn't faze you. You follow up. You don't wait. You keep a CRM clean and a pipeline forecast honest.
- You write well enough to draft a proposal, capability statement, or RFQ response without supervision. You can read a tender package and know whether Driftwood should bid - before estimating touches it.
- You know OSP at a working level. Duct and handhole, aerial and underground, splicing and testing, commissioning, as-builts. You don't need a P.Eng. You need to know what you're selling.
- You're comfortable being one of two BD people. Small team, real ownership.
Nice to have
- Existing relationships at regional BC telcos and ISPs, larger OSP contractors, or tower companies operating in BC
- Familiarity with Connecting Communities BC, CRTC Broadband Fund, or UBF program mechanics
- Background in estimating or quote coordination at a telecom contractor
Compensation
- Base salary in the $95,000 to $125,000 range, calibrated to experience.
- Variable compensation tied to closed gross margin on personally-attributed deals, paid quarterly on collected revenue.
- Realistic on-target earnings of $135,000 to $165,000 in year one, with meaningful upside for over-performance.
- Full extended health, dental, and vision coverage from day one, no waiting period.
- The role requires regular BC travel with occasional trips to Manitoba and Alberta
- Office presence is flexible.
